Dancehall

Jamaican party music: heavy riddims and MCs chatting over the beat.

Tempo, BPM
90–105
Where it started
Jamaica, late 1970s

What it sounds like

Reggae's faster, harder party cousin. A riddim (the beat) with heavy drums and bass, and a vocalist “toasting”: half rapping, half singing in Jamaican patois. The same riddim is often used for many songs.
